১৯৪৭-এর বিভাজনের পর পাকিস্তান সরকার উর্দুকে একমাত্র রাষ্ট্রভাষা ঘোষণার চেষ্টা করে। ১৯৫২ সালের ২১ ফেব্রুয়ারি ছাত্র-জনতা ‘রাষ্ট্রভাষা বাংলা চাই’ slogan-এ রাজপথে নামে; কারফিউ ভঙ্গ করে শহীদ মিনারের স্থানে রক্ত ঝরে। ১৯৯৯ সালে ইউনেস্কো ২১ ফেব্রুয়ারিকে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস হিসেবে স্বীকৃতি দেয়। ১৯৫২ সালের এই সংগ্রাম ১৯৭১-এর মুক্তিযুদ্ধের ভাবগঙ্গার সূচনা করে।After 1947, Pakistan tried to impose Urdu as the sole state language. On 21 February 1952 students marched demanding “Rashtrabhasha Bangla chai”; police opened fire near what became the Shaheed Minar. UNESCO recognized 21 February as International Mother Language Day in 1999. The 1952 movement seeded the ideology of the 1971 Liberation War.

একুশে ফেব্রুয়ারি বাংলা ভাষা ও সংস্কৃতির অস্তিত্ব রক্ষার প্রতীক। শহীদ মিনারে ফুল দেওয়া, প্রভাত ফেরি, কালো ব্যাজ ও ‘আমার ভাইয়ের রক্তে রাঙানো একুশে ফেব্রুয়ারি’ গান এই দিনের অবিচ্ছেদ্য অংশ। বিশ্বের অন্যান্য ভাষা-সংগ্রামীদের প্রতি একাত্মতাও এ দিন প্রকাশ পায়।Ekushey symbolizes the struggle to preserve Bengali language and culture. Flower offerings at Shaheed Minar, probhat ferry, black badges, and “Amar bhaiyer rokte rangano” define the day. It also expresses solidarity with language movements worldwide.
