জ্যৈষ্ঠ Joishtho
জ্যৈষ্ঠ গ্রীষ্মের দ্বিতীয় ও তীব্রতম মাস। রোদ, আমের পাক ও গ্রামীণ বিকেলের গল্প এই মাসের চেনা চিহ্ন। Joishtho is the second and often hottest summer month—sun, ripe mangoes, and long rural afternoons.
নামের অর্থMeaning of the name
জ্যেষ্ঠ নক্ষত্রের নামে মাসটি। সংস্কৃতে ‘জ্যেষ্ঠ’ মানে ‘বৃহত্তম/প্রবীণ’ — গ্রীষ্মের তাপে বছরের ‘পূর্ণ পরিণত’ অবস্থার ইঙ্গিত।Named after the Jyeshtha asterism; in Sanskrit jyeshtha means “eldest” or “greatest”—fitting peak summer heat.

ঐতিহ্যগত কৃষি সমাজে জ্যৈষ্ঠ ছিল ‘গরমের মাস’ — শস্য সংরক্ষণ ও সেচ প্রস্তুতির সময়। লোকগীতি ও পাঁচালিতে জ্যৈষ্ঠের রোদ ও দুর্ভিক্ষ-প্লাবনের কাহিনি মিলে মিশে আছে।In agrarian tradition Joishtho meant storing grain and preparing irrigation. Folk songs and epics weave its heat with tales of hardship and resilience.
‘জ্যৈষ্ঠের দিন গেলে বর্ষা আসে…’ — লোক প্রবাদে গ্রীষ্মের শেষে বর্ষার প্রতীক্ষা।“When Joishtho passes, the rains arrive…” — a folk saying for monsoon’s approach.
